Meet Sunglasses Kid, a self-taught music producer whose soundscapes transport listeners straight into the heart of their favorite 80s movies. From a childhood surrounded by his mother’s music to creating viral cinematic tracks, Sunglasses Kid blends nostalgia with modern production to create a unique auditory experience. His recent rise to social media fame is proof of his captivating sound and storytelling prowess.

From Piano Keys to Production Studios

Growing up with a pianist and composer mother, Sunglasses Kid’s journey into music was inevitable. His early explorations on a Blüthner grand piano and Korg M1 in the '90s laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. "I’m completely self-taught," he states. "I was too much trouble for formal lessons."

His passion for music production was ignited in film school, inspired by a friend scoring movies on a Korg Triton. He balanced film by day and music by night, crafting sample-based tracks on a slow PC using Fruity Loops. He was influenced by the likes of DJ Shadow, Unkle, Leftfield, and Orbital. This unique blend of cinematic and musical experiences paved the way for the Sunglasses Kid project in 2013. He was inspired by his love for 80s movies and music.

Musical Influences and Evolution

Sunglasses Kid’s sound is a nostalgic nod to 80s R&B and movie scores. His first two albums reflect his admiration for artists like The System, Scritti Politti, Jam and Lewis, and Teddy Riley. He has recently delved deeper into his extensive collection of 80s and 90s movie soundtracks, drawing inspiration from composers such as Hans Zimmer, James Horner, and Harold Faltermeyer.

"There was a unique blending of organic and synth sounds with physical instruments," he states. "Movie scores explore emotional depths in ways pop rarely does, and that’s why I love film music so much."

Exploring His Unique Sound

For Sunglasses Kid, every track begins with an atmosphere, a vibe, or a concept. He spends a lot of time selecting sounds, often starting with popular presets from the late '80s and early '90s. "I usually start writing by loading up a big lush FM electric piano," he states, "which often remains at the heart of a piece."

Collaborations with talented singers and musicians, especially guitarists and saxophonists, further enhance his music. His meticulous approach to sound selection and his love for reverb contribute to his distinctive, cinematic sound.

Crafting Cinematic Experiences

Sunglasses Kid may not be interested in synthesis, but he's a master of sound design. He knows how to use presets and VSTs to create both foundational and inspirational sounds. "I’m too busy trying to bottle lightning to stop and sculpt waveforms," he states. Reverb is one of his favorite tools. It transforms basic synth sounds into lush, atmospheric pads.

The Role of UJAM Plug-ins

When working on tight deadlines for movies, TV shows, or commercials, efficiency is non-negotiable. Sunglasses Kid is clear in his praise of UJAM’s Stranger Synth, citing its inspiring presets and ease of use as standout features. "It’s got lots of inspiring presets and is easy to create your own sounds or tweak existing ones," he states. "Stranger Synth is the new go-to VST in the toolbox, particularly for warmer analog pads and strings."

Desert Island VST

Sunglasses Kid would choose Stranger Synth if stranded on a desert island with only one UJAM plug-in. Its versatility makes it ideal for both darker cinematic music and lighter, more ambient pieces. It's perfect for capturing the emotional highs and lows of island life.
