The Evolution of Women in Music Production
For decades, the music industry—especially in production, mixing, and sound engineering has been overwhelmingly male dominated. But as digital tools and platforms break down traditional barriers, more women than ever are stepping into these roles. With talent and passion driving them, they are not just participating but reshaping the industry and proving that creativity knows no gender.
Meet Audilia: A Creative Force in the Industry
At UJAM, we’re proud to work with artists who push boundaries, and one of them is Audilia. As a talented producer and musician, Audilia brings a fresh perspective to the industry. She exemplifies the creativity, resilience, and artistry that women bring to music:
What challenges have you faced as a woman in the music industry, and how have you overcome them?
"I remember stepping onto a stage in my overalls, ready to perform with just my piano and my voice, only to be asked, ‘Don’t you want to wear something else for the performance?’ before I had even sung a single note. And I had to wonder, was this about the music, or was it about fitting into an expectation?"
"With my current project, I’ve finally found a community of indie artists and gear nerds where I can talk about sound design and production for hours, without my role being questioned or defined by gender. It’s a space where my presence as an artist is valued for what I create, not for how I look."
How do you see the role of women in music production evolving, and what would you like to see in the future?
"It’s encouraging to see more female producers carving their space, especially now that you don’t need a huge studio to create amazing music. But when you look at the numbers, women still make up a tiny percentage of credited producers in mainstream music. The old perception that men handle the tech while women stick to singing or songwriting still lingers, but it’s outdated, and it’s changing."
What advice would you give to aspiring producers, especially women, who are looking to break into the industry?
"The best thing we can do is keep creating, keep taking up space, and not wait for permission. I’d love to see a future where gender in music production isn’t even a topic anymore, where it’s simply about the music. But until then, the best way forward is to keep making music, keep showing up, and take up space unapologetically. The more we do, the more normal it becomes."
"A good friend once shared a quote with me that really stuck: “No matter what incredible things we create, no one ever does it entirely alone.” And that’s exactly how I see it. Music, creativity, it’s all about connection."
Supporting & Empowering Women in Music
While progress is being made, there’s still work to do. Women in music often face challenges such as underrepresentation, gender bias, and limited opportunities. If you're looking for organizations to support or resources for female musicians and producers, here are some great initiatives:
She Is The Music – A global nonprofit working to increase the number of women in music through mentorship, networking, and education.
Women in Music – A nonprofit that provides resources, networking opportunities, and education to advance women’s careers in the music industry.
Keychange – A movement promoting gender equality in music through artist development and conference opportunities.
Women’s Audio Mission – A San Francisco-based recording studio and nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive people in music/audio production and creative technology.
